Ultimate Organisational Habits to Maintain An Organised Home

Many people believe that they can’t keep their home organised because they’re not a naturally organised person.

Whilst it’s true that some people will need the help of a professional organiser to implement systems of organisation within their home to get them started, once these systems are in place, some simple habits are all it takes to maintain an organised and functional home.

Adopting a few daily, weekly and monthly organising habits will get you on the right track to maintaining a stress free and calm home and you might even come to look forward to and enjoy these organising rituals.

Maintain an organised home with these organising habits

Daily Habits

  • Make your bed
Although it may seem like a small insignificant thing, the simple act of making your bed every morning has a big impact. Firstly, you start your day with an accomplishment. Making your bed is also an easy way to make your bedroom look neat and tidy, and a visual reminder to keep other things organised; A pile of dirty laundry will look more out of place next to a made bed than an unmade one!

  • Always return items to their ‘home’
When every item you own has a home of its own, you’ll find it effortless to keep your house organised and clutter free. Returning items to their designated home makes tidying up simple for the whole family and locating what you’re looking for easy! If finding a home for every item you own seems impossible, don’t worry! A professional organiser can help you to declutter and establish a set place for all your items, so you’ll always know exactly where everything needs returning to.

  • Deal with post and paperwork as it comes
To avoid the dreaded piles of letters and paperwork that can so quickly build up, take a couple of minutes each day to sort through the post as it arrives. Discard what is not needed and deal with anything important as soon as possible.

By doing this, you’ll always know that you’re on top of important bills and other documents, plus you’ll help out your future self and reduce potential stress too!

Shelves full of books and plastic containers
  • Clean up after meals
Cleaning up and washing the dishes after each meal is a great habit to get into, and after a while you’ll find it becomes second nature. When you let dirty dishes pile up, the task of cleaning then becomes less and less appealing until a huge mess has formed.

Whilst keeping on top of your dirty dishes and clearing a wiping down the table after each use requires a bit of extra effort, the reward for doing so is a clean, clear and organised kitchen. You may even find it satisfying to complete the task from start to finish.

  • Reset each evening
Spend 5-10 minutes tidying up your home before you go to bed each night. These few minutes will have a big impact when done consistently and you’ll love waking up to a neat and tidy home. The best thing about this habit is that you get to start the day off on an organised foot!

Weekly Habits

  • Spend time on meal prep
Set aside time once per week to create a meal plan; there are so many benefits to adopting this habit. Planning out your meals at the beginning of the week means you will know exactly what food you need to buy and what you already have. Consequently, you won’t buy unnecessary items, thus saving you money. Additionally, your pantry won’t be filled with excess food so you will find keeping them organised super easy. Finally, by having your meals and recipes planned, you won’t waste time rummaging through your pantry, pulling out items and making a mess because you’ll already have a plan and the correct ingredients.

  • Focus on one room for 20 minutes
Each week, dedicate 20 minutes to a different room in your home. Use this time to return anything that doesn’t belong in the room to its correct home and give the room a spruce and reset.

During this time you may also want to assess where some storage solutions might come in handy or whether some decluttering needs to take place. The following week, choose a different room and so on.

Open kitchen drawer with food jars
  • Audit your fridge
Give your refrigerator a weekly audit to keep on top of fresh produce and prevent harmful moulds from building up. Discard anything that is past its best and give the shelves and drawers and quick wipe down with antibacterials spray.

It’s a good idea to incorporate this task into your week on the day before you do a food shop or your food shopping is due to be delivered.

  • Reset your wardrobe
At the end of a busy week, it's normal for a few items of clothing or accessories to be out of place. By getting into the habit of resetting your wardrobe at the end of each week, you can go into Monday morning knowing that you’ll be able to find the exact items you’re looking for.

During your reset, you should ensure all laundry is put away, any loose items around the room returned to their home and any dirty items added to the laundry basket.

Monthly Habits

  • Set aside time to declutter
As well as decluttering items as you go, each month, set aside one hour or two thirty minute sessions to declutter your possessions.

Over the space of a month, it is highly likely that you will have added items to your home; new clothes, books, ornaments, food or accessories, so it makes sense to declutter some items to keep the balance in your home.

Focus on the areas of the home that are most cluttered and decide which items should be discarded and which items can be donated or sold. This habit will help you to continually declutter your spaces and reduce the clutter (and sometimes guilt!) of bringing new items into your home.

  • Deep clean your home
Once per month, you should take the opportunity to give your home a thorough clean. If this seems too overwhelming, you can always deep clean half your home one month and the other half the next.

By keeping on top of all cleaning tasks on a monthly basis, you can prevent dirt and dust from building up in the harder to reach places and maintain a fresh and clean feeling within your home.

A monthly deep clean room by room also acts as an organisation reset for any items that have found themselves in the wrong location within the home.
