10 Kids' Closet Organisation Ideas for a Clutter-Free Space

Organising clothes in a kid’s wardrobe can be a nightmare.

If you’re looking for practical tips on how to organise your kid’s wardrobe and more importantly, how to get it to stay that way, then you’re in the right place!

We know that kids can be messy and their closet and clothes are no exception.

That’s why our organisation experts have come up with the following 10 organisation ideas to help you create neat and well-organised children’s clothes storage in your home.

1. Declutter the wardrobe

An overfilled children’s wardrobe is going to be very difficult to organise and even harder to maintain. That’s why the first and most important thing you can do to optimise your kids' closet space is to declutter their clothing items first.

Get them involved in the process too! Empty out the closet of all items, and sort through creating three piles; discard, donate, keep.

Discard any damaged items, donate any items that still have life left in them but are too small or your child no longer wears and keep all other items.

If your child is involved in this process, they are more likely to understand how and want to maintain the organisation in the future.

2. Create categories

After decluttering, now is the time to take inventory of the items your child will keep.

When setting up an organisation system for a kids closet, in our experience, it works well if you can dedicate specific categories of clothing or accessories to individual drawers.

Categorise your kids clothing and accessories based on how many drawers and how much hanging space is available in their closet.

Common categories we use when organising kids clothing include; underwear, pyjamas, t-shirts, trousers, skirts, jumpers, school uniform.

When it comes to accessories, do the same! Group items in categories e.g. hair bands, hats, sunglasses, bags. Accessories tend to work best in the higher, shallow drawers, where they are most convenient to access.

3. File fold your kids clothes

One of our favourite tips for storing items in a kids closet is to file-fold their clothes.

When clothes are stacked on top of one another in a drawer, you’ll more likely than not forget what is at the bottom and your kids will rifle through the folded clothes at the top to find what’s underneath.

When you file-fold their clothes you’ll be able to see every t-shirt, pair of trousers and socks; your kids will know exactly what they’re getting when they choose an item and will have no need to mess up the other folding!

4. Add bins

File-folding clothes into bins is a brilliant way to store clothes when drawer space is limited as it ensures items are easily accessible and takes up far less space than hanging.

If hanging space is limited in your kids closet, only hang items that absolutely require it. Folding items such as jeans, t-shirts and jumpers is much more space efficient.

The file-fold is our favourite as it is space-saving, allowing items to be stored vertically rather than stacked; this makes it much easier for your kids to view and find exactly what they’re looking for.

Placed on open shelves, the bins can act as drawers and can be easily accessed and moved around as seasons change.

5. Colour coordinate

Not only will kids love having their clothes organised like a rainbow, colour coordinating your child’s wardrobe has the added benefit of helping them to easily locate clothing by colour.

They’ll also love figuring out where each item belongs when it comes to tidying away clean clothes!

6. Add labels

A great way to get and keep your kids' closet uncluttered and organised is to use a label maker to create descriptive labels that can be placed on the inside or outside of the drawers, shelves, cupboards etc.

The addition of labels to your kid’s closet will make it easier for them to locate the exact item they need quickly and efficiently without having to rifle through their whole closet of clothes and create a mess every time they get dressed!

If your kids are younger, Image stickers or stencils are a great way to label the exterior of the drawers allowing them to easily identify at a glance, what items belong where.

7. Use matching hangers

Although this seems like a very simple change, we can’t stress enough how much of a difference switching over to matching hangers can make in a kids closet.

Matching slimline hangers in a kid’s wardrobe are especially useful if you’re looking to optimise a small hanging space.

8. Use dividers in drawers

Adding dividers to closet drawers will enable you to separate clothing into categories, for example long sleeved t shirts, short sleeved t shirts, trousers, shorts, skirts etc.

The addition of drawer dividers will also make it easier for your kid’s to recognise which item is where as well as make it easier to return items of clothing to the correct location.

9. Designate a laundry basket

A great way to help make sure your kids bedroom and closet area remains clutter free is to add a laundry basket with an open lid to the room. This way, once an item is dirty it can easily be placed into the laundry bin rather than dropped on the floor!

Store it inside the wardrobe, behind a door, in a corner or even in the bathroom if you’re short on floor space in the bedroom. Just make sure it’s easily accessible!

10. Get your kids involved!

If your kids are old enough to dress themselves and be expected to put their own clothing away then they are old enough to have a say and play a part in their closet organisation. In order for them to be able to maintain their organised, clutter-free closet they will need to know the system.

Be sure to create a system that is easy for them to follow. For example, all tops in one drawer, all bottoms in another, all smart clothes hanging etc.; whatever works best for their closet space.

Create the system together and help your child to implement it so their clothing can stay organised.

Creating a clutter-free kid’s closet doesn’t need to be stressful!

We know it can feel overwhelming when you’re faced with scrunched up clothes stuffed in drawers and jumbled up clothes piled on shelves.

However, organising your kids’ closet and optimising the space doesn’t need to be stressful! Just follow our organisation tips and ideas tips and you’ll have a clutter-free kid’s closet in no time at all!
